Voting Question: What's the best method to re-waterproof a textile jacket?

Outer shell is polyurethane coated nylon. It might be time for new gear as you say Munkstump. This one has had a full 3 years of all weather. The fabric itself weeps, seems as if the coating has gone. I haven't had good results with sprays in the past. They do cause water to bead on the surface of the fibers, but air pressure forces the water between the fibers. TXm42 - would love to be able to e-mail you. Resolved Question: What do you use to make a circuit board (PCB) waterproof?

Hello I am designing a product and i need to make a circuit board waterproof. I need more than conformal coating too. The idea is to put the circuit board into a small dish (actually the case part of a project enclosure without the lid) and then fill the enclosure with some material that will make it waterproof. Ive seen this done before but I don't know exactly what to use. Im thinking epoxy is what they use but that is just a guess. Something that flowed more easily and then hardened would be ideal though. Also if I didn't have to mix two parts (i.e. epoxy) that would be great and if they have it in black that would be good too. If anyone knows what this is and where I can get some I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks  more

Voting Question: Paper Mache Questions: How to prevent mold, waterproof, etc...?

Hi, I just began my first papier mache project making a really neat giant sneaker and am just about ready to paint and am a little timid as to how I should proceed. in short, I want my project to last...a very long time. i was planning on putting a clear coat of spray paint and then a coat of spray paint primer to seal it before painting with craft paint. will this work? am i wasting my time with the clear coat/primer? what i'm most worried about is mold. i don't like it and i don't want it. so, i want to make sure that before i spend all of the time painting that the surface underneath is sealed good and tight. if a clear coat and primer won't do this please let me know. if it will work, great! i'd also like to know what works best in waterproofing (if it is indeed possible to leave paper mache projects outside for a relatively long period of time). thanks in advance, Jeremiah also, i should note that the paste i used was 2 parts water, 1 part flour  more

Resolved Question: The Open Window by Saki???? Is this the whole story?

"MY aunt will be down presently, Mr. Nuttel," said a very self-possessed young lady of fifteen; "in the meantime you must try and put up with me." Framton Nuttel endeavoured to say the correct something which should duly flatter the niece of the moment without unduly discounting the aunt that was to come. Privately he doubted more than ever whether these formal visits on a succession of total strangers would do much towards helping the nerve cure which he was supposed to be undergoing. "I know how it will be," his sister had said when he was preparing to migrate to this rural retreat; "you will bury yourself down there and not speak to a living soul, and your nerves will be worse than ever from moping. I shall just give you letters of introduction to all the people I know there. Some of them, as far as I can remember, were quite nice." Framton wondered whether Mrs. Sappleton, the lady to whom he was presenting one of the letters of introduction, came into the nice division. "Do you know many of the people round here?" asked the niece, when she judged that they had had sufficient silent communion. "Hardly a soul," said Framton. "My sister was staying here, at the rectory, you know, some four years ago, and she gave me letters of introduction to some of the people here." He made the last statement in a tone of distinct regret. "Then you know practically nothing about my aunt?" pursued the self-possessed young lady. "Only her name and address," admitted the caller. He was wondering whether Mrs. Sappleton was in the married or widowed state. An undefinable something about the room seemed to suggest masculine habitation. "Her great tragedy happened just three years ago," said the child; "that would be since your sister's time." "Her tragedy?" asked Framton; somehow in this restful country spot tragedies seemed out of place. "You may wonder why we keep that window wide open on an October afternoon," said the niece, indicating a large French window that opened on to a lawn. "It is quite warm for the time of the year," said Framton; "but has that window got anything to do with the tragedy?" "Out through that window, three years ago to a day, her husband and her two young brothers went off for their day's shooting. They never came back. In crossing the moor to their favourite snipe-shooting ground they were all three engulfed in a treacherous piece of bog. It had been that dreadful wet summer, you know, and places that were safe in other years gave way suddenly without warning. Their bodies were never recovered. That was the dreadful part of it." Here the child's voice lost its self-possessed note and became falteringly human. "Poor aunt always thinks that they will come back some day, they and the little brown spaniel that was lost with them, and walk in at that window just as they used to do. That is why the window is kept open every evening till it is quite dusk. Poor dear aunt, she has often told me how they went out, her husband with his white waterproof coat over his arm, and Ronnie, her youngest brother, singing 'Bertie, why do you bound?' as he always did to tease her, because she said it got on her nerves. Do you know, sometimes on still, quiet evenings like this, I almost get a creepy feeling that they will all walk in through that window - " She broke off with a little shudder. It was a relief to Framton when the aunt bustled into the room with a whirl of apologies for being late in making her appearance. "I hope Vera has been amusing you?" she said. "She has been very interesting," said Framton. "I hope you don't mind the open window," said Mrs. Sappleton briskly; "my husband and brothers will be home directly from shooting, and they always come in this way. They've been out for snipe in the marshes to-day, so they'll make a fine mess over my poor carpets. So like you men-folk, isn't it?" She rattled on cheerfully about the shooting and the scarcity of birds, and the prospects for duck in the winter. To Framton it was all purely horrible. He made a desperate but only partially successful effort to turn the talk on to a less ghastly topic; he was conscious that his hostess was giving him only a fragment of her attention, and her eyes were constantly straying past him to the open window and the lawn beyond. It was certainly an unfortunate coincidence that he should have paid his visit on this tragic anniversary. "The doctors agree in ordering me complete rest, an absence of mental excitement, and avoidance of anything in the nature of violent physical exercise," announced Framton, who laboured under the tolerably wide-spread delusion that total strangers and chance acquaintances are hungry for the least detail of one's ailments and infirmities, their cause and cure. "On the matter of diet they are not so much in agreement," he continued. "No?" said Mrs. Sappleton, in a voice which only replaced a yawn at the last moment. Then s Framton grabbed wildly at his stick and hat; the hall-door, the gravel-drive, and the front gate were dimly-noted stages in his headlong retreat. A cyclist coming along the road had to run into the hedge to avoid an imminent collision. "Here we are, my dear," said the bearer of the white mackintosh, coming in through the window; "fairly muddy, but most of it's dry. Who was that who bolted out as we came up?" "A most extraordinary man, a Mr. Nuttel," said Mrs. Sappleton; "could only talk about his illnesses, and dashed off without a word of good-bye or apology when you arrived. One would think he had seen a ghost." "I expect it was the spaniel," said the niece calmly; "he told me he had a horror of dogs. He was once hunted into a cemetery somewhere on the banks of the Ganges by a pack of pariah dogs, and had to spend the night in a newly dug grave with the creatures snarling and grinning and foaming just above him. Enough to make anyone their nerve." "No?" said Mrs. Sappleton, in a voice which only replaced a yawn at the last moment. Then she suddenly brightened into alert attention - but not to what Framton was saying. "Here they are at last!" she cried. "Just in time for tea, and don't they look as if they were muddy up to the eyes!" Framton shivered slightly and turned towards the niece with a look intended to convey sympathetic comprehension. The child was staring out through the open window with dazed horror in her eyes. In a chill shock of nameless fear Framton swung round in his seat and looked in the same direction. In the deepening twilight three figures were walking across the lawn towards the window; they all carried guns under their arms, and one of them was additionally burdened with a white coat hung over his shoulders. A tired brown spaniel kept close at their heels. Noiselessly they neared the house, and then a hoarse young voice chanted out of the dusk: "I said, Bertie, why do you bound?" Romance at short notice was her speciality.  more

Resolved Question: Looking for new cold weather hunting gear for next year?

Resolved Question: What is Nylon Taffeta 190T water repellent & waterproof p/u coated material used for please?!?

I've got a big roll of the stuff and I'm wondering if I can use it to make the nappy wraps (the bit on the outside that stops them leaking if it gets soaked through inside), would like to know what it's for if I can't use it for nappies! Thank you :) Thanks to you both!!! I'd use it for the wrap bit of a nappy that's away from the skin and helps stop leaks :)  more

Resolved Question: Anyone who used the Givenchy Phenomen'Eyes Mascara?

I have very flimsy, straight, short lashes. Those type of lashes nobody wants. Lately I've been trying Covergirl's Lash Blast and it's a little okay but it doesn't do much, even after using an eyelash curler. So the other day I went to Sephora and tried on the Givenchy mascara (the funny one that looks like a medieval wrecking ball thing) and my lashes looked great after one coat! Unfortunately, I didn't purchase it because I was still a little "iffy" about it. So for any of those who have already tried it here here are some questions: Does it smudge easily? Can it last 6-9 hours of the day without getting raccoon eyes? Is it worth the price? Will they ever come out with one with a waterproof formula? Is it the mascara consistency or the wand/ball thing that makes the lashes longer? How did they make your lashes look? Please and thank you. (:  more

Resolved Question: I want to stain some areas of a deck. What treated deck lumber is available that is good for staining?

I prefer a treated lumber that is a natural color. Many have a greenish tint and are not suitable. Some have an "oily" quality that prevents good stain penetration. I will finish my work with a waterproofing coating so I am primarily interested in lumber treated in a way that will prevent insect, mold, fungus, etc. damage. Resolved Question: vapor xxxx skates questions?

hey guys i think im going to get the vapor xxxx skates ( no way ill be able to afford the vapor 60's right now)and i have a few questions... first...someone said they arent making these any more second...i want to "black out " my skates like in this picture http://www.facebook.com/photo_search.php?page=9&oid=2217293287&aid=-1&auser&view=all#/photo.php?pid=6062065&op=9&o=all&view=all&subj=2217293287&aid=-1&oid=2217293287&id=627765242 and this is how he did it OK, I've had a lot of people sending me messages asking about how to black out their skates. I'll give you all a step-by-step on how I did my Vapor XXXXs. I've never done this to any other kind of skate, so if you try this on something other than vapors, your results may vary. For a complete blackout, you'll need an X-Acto knife, some spraypaint (I used 1 can of Rustoleum Universal in satin black, $9 or so at your local home improvement megastore), masking tape, a 100 (or "fine") grit sanding sponge and about 2 hours. If you want to just blackout the quarters, like in this photo(http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/photo.php?pid=4892638&id=627765242), you'll need the Sharpie Magnum (the biggest one they make) and a brush tip Faber-Castell PITT artist pen in black. The Sharpie is good for covering the stitching and big sections at a time, but it has a tendency to fade and turn kind of purple. The PITT pen is colorfast and waterproof and won't fade with wear or if it gets wet. Use the PITT pen to go along the edges and logos to keep the lines looking really clean. You can use the pointed tip to get in the little dots around the ankles, the outlines of the logos and the fabric parts of the tendon guard, then fill the stitches and larger parts with the big Sharpie. When it's all dry, go over the whole thing again with the PITT pen and be careful not to get sloppy around the edges. When you get it all even, wait a day or so before skating on it. It will stay fresh-looking for a long time. Mine stayed looking good for 4 months before I went for the all-black look. Now for the blackout look. The absolutely MOST important step on this deal is the masking job. You have to plan out what parts you want black and what parts you don't and you also have to be VERY careful to mask off around the holder, the toe cap, the outsole, the red pieces, inside the skate and the logos. It's always better to mask a little more than you want to, then use the X-Acto knife to trim the excess. Be careful with the knife, because you can literally cut right through the skate if you press too hard. Once that is done, take your sanding sponge and lightly go over the silver parts of the tendon guard, the shiny part at the heel and along the eyelets. You don't have to grind it down, just rough it enough enough so it will hold onto the paint. Hold the skate by the holder and paint side-to-side in quick, short burts to avoid drips. Go slow and take your time to make sure everything gets coated. Each coat is going to be just a thin one over the entire skate. You can put on rubber gloves if you want because this paint sticks to EVERYTHING, including your precious lily-white skin, princess. When the first coat is done, hang the skate up to dry while you start work on the other one. I used a coat hanger with the hook pushed through the hollow part of the blade holder to hang it up. By the time you're done putting the first coat on the second skate, the first one will be dry. Two coats on each skate should get everything looking good. Let them dry at least overnight before you start pulling the masking tape off. Use the X-Acto to peel up the masking tape very carefully and you'll be left with a clean-looking skate with no chips in the paint or drips. Let it dry for another day or so before you lace them up and skate on them. Get creative if you want. Use a team color to paint the fabric parts of the tendon guard or something. Do something to make it your own, you don't want to be one of 988793 guys at the rink with blacked-out skates! ok well do u think this would mess up the hydrophobic liner? also any clue what the price of the vapor 60 skates would be in juniors?  more

Voting Question: Why would there be sand in waterproof masonry paint, and do I need to redo the job now?

I am painting my basement walls which are poured concrete. I used a premium behr paint for most of it, but got down to the last corner room and broke down and got a gallon of Color Place waterproof masonary paint from Wal-Mart. Well, first of all, the guy who mixed the color for me apparently did not read the part on the label that said to add the amount of pigments indicated for a quart to the gallon container to get the color, so he added way to much pigment and I have a much darker color than I wanted... (it looked a little darker when they showed me the mix in the store, but on the wall now it looks really dark, which is when I read the label and saw the part about adding the pigments at the 1 qt ratio!) but leaving aside the color problem, I was cleaning out my brush and there was a TON of sand in it. I had noticed some particles in the paint as it was going on the wall, but figured it was just caking on the brush, which had become very "fat" and had no edge, so I figured I was just going to slow or had overloaded it. Well, I went down and ran my hand of the wall, and not only was it rough, but I could hear the sand particles falling off and hitting the floor.... I guess the reason my brush was so fat was that it was holding a ton of sand. It was totally clean before the job, so the sand had to be in the paint. I found a web site that says cheaper waterproof paints often use sand... but presumably it is supposed to be in a soluble form. There is no date code on my can of paint, so I don't know if the paint was bad, or if it's supposed to be full of undisolved grains of sand. As I see it, I have three options: 1) leave it alone, 2) wash off the loose sand with some elbow grease and a wire brush and then put on a coat of premium brand waterproof paint that hopefully doesn't have sand in it, and 3) strip the crappy paint off the wall with TSP or muriatic acid and then start over with good paint. I would love it if someone could explain whether the sand in the paint like this is normal for low quality waterproof masonry paint, as well as any informed (i.e., quasi-professional) opinions of whether I should go with option 1,2 or 3. Thanks  more

Resolved Question: Best Astro-Binoculars For Amateur Astronomer? Celestron?

Hi! Well, i've always had a strong interest in astronomy. Unfortunately, over the last 3-4 years i've been diverted from that interest because of school and moving around alot. But recently i began reading a book about the origins of our study on Astronomy and its really perked my interest in astronomy again. So, since im graduating, i decided nows a good time to get into it before i get diverted away from it again. So i did some research, and i learnt/was told that for a beginner, its better to buy a pair of Astro-Binoculars rather than a telescope to familiarize your self with the stars, not only that, the wide viewing angle also allows you to see alot more. So i've come down to two pairs which i cannot tell which is the better pair to buy, so here i am. Pair 1: Celestron 15x70 SkyMaster binoculars ($80) -Bak-4 Porro Prisms -Fully multi-coated - 230ft@1000 - 4.4 degree FOV - exit pupil 4.47mm -water proof (link: http://www.spottingscopes.com/binoculars/astronomy-binoculars/celestronskymaster15x70centerfocus.cfm#ReviewHeader) Pair 2: Celestron 20x80 SkyMasters ($120) -Bak-4 Prisms -Fully multicoated -167@1000 -3.2 degrees FOV -exit pupil 4mm -not waterproof (water resistant) (link: http://www.spottingscopes.com/binoculars/astronomy-binoculars/celestronskymaster20x80centerfocus.cfm#tabs) SO which of the two is A) Better? B) More Suited for an Amateur C) Give me Better enjoyment/results ? D) Best Value for Money? P.S. Celestron is a good brand to be looking at right?? im told its one of the best? P.S. i live in the philippines, does anyone know where i cna buy good binoculars here? EVERYONE REPLIED REALLY WELL, THANKS EVERYONE! I APPRECIATE IT! 100% Spot ON TO What i Was Looking for! ANd YEs, I've been to Puerto Galera, Really nice. HAve to be honest though, it was raining when i was there, so i didnt see any stars :(  more

Resolved Question: How to paint on surfaces such as steel. Please Help!?

hey, im looking to start creating my own fishing lures such as a wobbler. if you don't already know, a wobbler is a fishing lure that is shaped like a spoon. i am wondering how to paint the surface of my spoon-like lures so they look nice. the paint needs to stick on and be very durable. also, it needs to be waterproof. the surface i will be painting on will be made of brass, aluminium or steel (about 2 mm thick). the main thing is that this paint needs to be waterproof, rustproof and durable. i have asked random people and they all seem to say i need to sand the surface, then prime it, then use an oil based paint to spray on it, and finally, use some time of coating to lock everything in. i am not sure if that is correct so i am asking you guys. thanks in advance. cheers! ps. if anyone could give me a rough estimate as to how much a 2' x 2' piece of metal would be in these types of metals: aluminium steel stainless steel brass THANKS AGAIN!  more

Resolved Question: Does anyone have tips on good mascara and on eyelash care, help please?

I have long, thin lashes that don't curl at all. They used to curl. When I first started wearing mascara I didn't need to use a curler but I started after only a few months because it made it a bit more dramatic, they would touch my eyebrows and it made them look super long! (Not scary long though.) I didn't wear the super thick mascara and I only put one coat on so they looked natural (my eyelashes are dark blonde so you can't really see them w/out mascara) and they always behaved very nicely and maintained curl...I got so many compliments on my lashes. Well, by the time my senior year of high school rolled around my lashes no longer curled AT ALL, in fact a few of them actually curl downward on the ends so I ALWAYS have to use a curler when I wear mascara now...ant to top it off it has reached the point that waterproof formulas seem to be the only kind of mascara I can wear that will actually maintain the curl. Mascara and gloss used to be my favorite makeup items...now it's just gloss because I can't seem to find a good mascara. Any ideas on what mascara I could use or what I could do to get my old eyelashes back??? I miss them!!! All suggestions will be appreciated. :)  more

Resolved Question: Are dog owners paranoid about bathing their dogs?

Am I the only one here who doesn't think that frequent bathing is bad? Does an indoor dog really need the oil in his skin? He lives in the AC in the summer and the heat in the winter, doesn't need to be waterproof or weatherproof. Don't you think that dirt and grime in the coat which dogs naturally accumulate while playing or walking outside will cause lots of irritation to the skin and hair? Think about when you go outside and get dirt or sand in your shoes, how much does that irritate your skin? Dirt also causes breakage or the hair and a dirty dog's coat will not grow to it's full potential. My dogs are bathed weekly. Sometimes I use human shampoo too! Their coat is in top condition and their skin isn't dry. I guess the proof is in the dog show ribbons on my wall. If the dogs had bad coats they wouldn't be champions. So what's with the dog bathing paranoia?  more

Resolved Question: Winter blanket for an Arabian?

Hello everyone, I have a six-year-old Arabian gelding that I adopted from the horse rescue. We have quite the success story, but long story short: he came to me skinny and untrained and now he's pleasantly plump and very well trained. I originally thought that he would be fine without a winter blanket because his coat was like an otter's: dense but not necessarily real "poofy". But I discovered that his coat is not very repellent of water, so snow melts on his back and freezes, making him shiver. I blanket both of my boys when it gets below fifteen degrees because the Arab is fine with cold; it's just the snow that gets him. I have been putting the only blanket I have that isn't being worn: a size 78" waterproof 300 gram polyfill blanket. It fits him alright... he's a size 72" so it is too long for him and it is too loose around the shoulders, but it doesn't cause him any problems. However, being that he is staying with us for life now (we just legally adopted him), I would like to get him his own blanket. I am looking for a waterproof heavy weight (200-300 gram polyfill) blanket under $100 made for narrow horses with a considerable drop length (to cover his plumpness). So, my question is... Does anyone know of a reasonably priced blanket that would be suitable for a Arab? Sorry for the length... I like to be thorough... Thanks in advance! :] Okay guys, I've found a few blankets that seem to be decent. If you can't find anything that would work, please just tell me what you think of these... http://www.horse.com/Saxon-1200-Denier-Medium-Wt-Turnout-Blanket-BEA20.html http://www.jeffersequine.com/ssc/product.asp?CID=1&mscssid=6SQQNA60QKMR8NKBQ7S5UG1SGVCU53C8 I don't like the drop length on that one, though ^^^ Any more ideas? oops sorry this one too http://www.sstack.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=9824&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=3&iSubCat=695&iProductID=9824 Sorry about that jeffers one. Resolved Question: How long does the waterproofing spray last on UGG boots?

I have been wearing my MENS CLASSIC SHORT CHESTNUT UGG boots for close to 4 weeks now. Before I started wearing them I waterproofed them (3 coats). My feet stayed warm and dry. Someone said to wear socks with them so they don't smell cause I wear them barefoot. The first time I wore socks I had a wet spot by my big toe that soaks all the way through. Is it the socks or do they need to be re coated with waterproofing? The UGG info sheet says to wear them barefoot which I have been to maximize the benefits of the boots. Resolved Question: whistler, skiing, day trip, clothing hire, if you have been there hope you can help!!?

We are going to Whistler for one day only, in february. We want to do a skiing lesson for the day. Can you hire clothing there?? If so what sizes - my issue is i'm a larger lady (US size 16-18) and if I can hire some waterproof trousers and coat it would be good, as its only for the day - or should I bring my own? Where on the mountains do the beginners lessons take part? Is it worthwhile having lessons for one day, if only here for the day, or would something else be a better use of time?? Will we be able to use the peak to peak?? (Think the answer to this is no - if we are having a full day lesson, we will have lessons so no time to use peak to peak??????) If we don't have any ski lessons could we just use the peak to peak to sightsee?? If we just sightsee would waterproof trousers still be necessary?? Would boots and warm clothes be good enough?? What would be the best use of one full day in your opinion?? I want to experience Whistler, what shouldn't we miss??? I want to see everything but know that I can't, so any suggestions would be great. Thanks  more
