Resolved Question: My mom won't tell me much about my family history?

(sorry, it's a big long-ish but at minimum read the last paragraph and you should get the point.... thanks!) I'm 20. and I have a bit of an issue where my mom won't tell me very much about my family history.... she tells me SOME things, but refuses to tell me other things, and it kind of feels like she's hiding something from me... I could never talk to my grandparents or any other family members because they all speak strictly german, Me and my dad speak strictly english, and my mom is the only one that speaks both. Things like.... My grandpa fought in the second world war in Germany.,... but that's the only details she'll really tell me about.. is that he was in the war. Nothing else. Nothing about my great grandparents, or any of them, and I haven't even MET my aunts, uncles, or any of my cousins... We live in Canada now, and my grandparents did as well since the 70s but the rest of that side of the family still lives in germany. My grandma left me her jewelry and antique collection and a lot of memorabilia in her will and my mom wouldn't let me see it.... she sold it/destroyed it. I was told my grandpa picked up a disease or something like that in the war which was something that had the ability to be passed down to children (this was before my mom was born) but she wont tell me what it was and said she'd rather not be tested for it herself... So I don't know what I should be paying attention for or if it's even something I should be worried about, but I DO remember her saying something when I was much younger that my grandpa cheated on my grandmother a lot during the war. I know very little about family medical history. I know my grandpa died of lung cancer.... But nothing about anyone else... I also know an "immune disorder" runs in the female side of the family, but i have no idea exactly what it is, and I know that it's affected every female in the family except my mom.... I'm also fairly sure my aunt is/has been in the hospital for it as well but I really couldn't tell for sure. I don't even know if they're 100% german. My mom has mentioned something about being 50% german 50% something else, but won't tell me. It's driving me insane and it makes me really nervous that she's trying to hide important things from me that I should know about.... Is there anything I can do? I don't even know any of their names other than my grandparents (mom won't tell me) or where they grew up or anything! Even when I had to do a family history report in school with things like creating a family tree, jobs of your grandparents, etc, my mom refused to answer the questions and I had to do the project on the teacher's family :( @Tom... My grandparents are long gone... My grandpa died 12 years ago and my grandma just died on new years..... My grandma was born in 1913, My grandpa a few years earlier, not sure exactly... They were already retired when they moved here so they didn't work. And my grandma had BAD Alzheimer for the last 10 or so years and even my mom couldn't talk to her and I was too young before that.  more

Resolved Question: Is there still a "Pannekuken" Cafe(?spelling) in Nome, Alaska?

I think the name is right. It would have been around, at least late '70s, early '80s. If it's still around, I'd like to get in touch. If not, I'd like to find memorabilia.  more
