I learned Actionscript 2.0, but recently heard about how much faster and more versatile AS3 is. I would prefer to use this in my games, but I cannot find any specific resources. I plan on buying a book, but for the time being, I would love to find any free online resources that can teach you basic syntax, even better if it has examples of how to use the code. I would like to be able to create many variables inside 1 thing... is that called a function or a class or what and how do i do it? I am creating an animal rescue game, I need to keep track of all the animals in the rescue and each animal will have their own stats (name, breed, species, sex, age). I was thinking that by calling up one name i could call up the breed, species, age, sex of the animal too... kind of like a library of information... how do i do this? I'm fairly new to actionscript and Flash, but i have other programming experience in Visual Basic and LabVIEW. I'm a flash programmer. usually I work with RPG type flash game programming, which includes no use of the hitTest. My problem is whenever I try to use hitTest, the game does not hitTest accurately. Instead of it reacting to details around the object, when the object collides with another it is treated as a square. This is particularly problematic, because my latest project (which I can't reveal much of ;) ) involves a gun, that is rotated. using arrow keys. There is an invisible line at the tip of the gun which acts as the detector of fire for the hitTest. what REALLY annoys me is how when the gun is rotated, even if the line isn't anywhere near the line of fire, a collision is detected. the code I'm currently using is: if (_root.player.gun.fireline.hitTest(_root.enemy) { _root.health -= damage; } I REALLY need help with this. Hello, I have a website with ONE flash menu/intro/animation on each page (same on every page) and every page has obviously different title, content, etc. I keep all of my variables in one php file called var.php, and I include that var.php into all of my other php-pages so I can just edit that var.php whenever I need to instead of having to edit every single file. Basically I've gotten into flash development and I was curious as to what a compiled SWF file actually contains. I dont think it would be binary, since SWF files are not directly executeable (and they are also cross platform). I know that they arent raw actionscript due to the compilation process. I'm assuming Adobe Flash adopts a similar system to Sun Microsystems' Java technology and Microsoft's .NET in which the actionscript would be compiled to a form of middle level bytecode which is THEN compiled by a JIT interpreter and executed on the fly, the JIT compiler in this case being either the RAW Flash Player or a Flash Plugin loaded into a web browser. Am I correct in this, or do they contain some other form of data? more

Hi all. I've just stepped into ActionScript (i have a background in executable and web development) and I must say i love the language right now. However, I'm having a hard time finding a reference for a symbols attributes and methods (since Flash CS4 doesnt have code completion for symbols). Just to clarify: If i draw a text object and want to dynamically modify its contents, i can do so (if its been set up as dynamic text), through use of the .text attribute. I'm making a flash animation in Adobe Flash CS3 and would like some help in getting the .swf file to have a fixed size once it's hosted on the net, since at the moment, the animation resizes itself when the window is resized. I'm guessing it has to do with actionscript. Would anyone be so kind as to help me with this? more

I have just 1 problerm I need to figure out. I somehow seem to be unable to code a actionscript in frame 30 that stops just one movieclip and lets the rest loop. I cant access the movieclips i made. For example if I make a new project: 1. I make 2 layers for a car and a cloud. 2. I insert in the car and cloud layer the matching images and set them to movieclip and give them the instancenames car_mc and cloud_mc 3. I make matching motion tweens for the 2 objects cloud_mc is supposed to circle in the sky car_mc drives to the middle of the screen When I start it, it does just that in loop,but I want the car to drive up just once and then stay there and exactly there is my problem. I click on the carlayer at the last frame and write into actionscrip: car_mc.stop(); all I get is that there is no syntax error and in the end it has no effect whatsoever on the movie. I manage to make the whole movie stop and go, but as soon as I try to adress just the cloud or the car it just wont work. What am I missing? more
